ANNUAL COMMEMORATIVE SERVICE AT THE SADF WALL OF REMEMBRANCE
Pretoria, 15 May 2013. The annual commemorative service at the SADF Wall of Remembrance at the Voortrekker Monument Heritage Site, will be held on Sunday, 26 May 2013. The proceedings will start at 09h00 for 09h40, and according to all indications it will once again be attended by hundreds of interested persons.
The SADF Wall of Remembrance was inaugurated during a moving wreath-laying ceremony on 25 October 2009. This was attended by many family members of those persons who lost their lives during the period from 31 May 1961 (declaration of the Republic) to 27 April 1994 (the date on which the SADF was incorporated into the new SA National Defence Force). The ceremony has been continued annually thereafter, with approximately one hundred wreaths being laid and crosses planted every year.
An inclusive approach is being followed regarding the names appearing on the Wall of Remembrance. That means that not only the names of persons who died during military operations are included, but also those that served in the SADF during that time who died under other qualifying circumstances. According to Major General Gert Opperman, the Managing Director of the Heritage Foundation, reasons for the inclusion of somebody’s name are considered, rather than that for exclusion. “We believe that this can be a great way to promote cohesion, and it also helps the families find closure”, he says.
Families and friends of deceased members and interested members of the public are invited to attend the commerative service on 26 May, and to lay a wreath or plant a cross in memory of their loved one.
Persons who have not yet responded but who still want to attend the service and be allocated a reserved seat, are requested to provide their particulars to Thea at firstname.lastname@example.org or tel: 012-325 7885, by not later than 16h00 on Monday, 20 May 2013. Provision will in any case be made for members of the public who decide later on that they still wish to attend.
