Our assistant archivist, Petra Luus, catalogued the personal collection of Prof. Marius Johannes Swart (1931–2007) in July. The collection includes correspondence, speeches, reports, photographs and scrapbooks.

As historian, Prof. Swart published on aspects of Afrikaner history and culture. Prof. Swart was a member of several organisations, including the Port Elizabeth Museum Council (1967–1983), South African Historical Society (1956–1996), South African Science and Arts Academy (from 1976), and the Rapportryersbeweging (1967–1979). He served on the executive board of the Federation of Afrikaans Cultural Organisations (from 1970s), as honorary president of the Port Elizabeth Dramatic Society (from 1973) and as national chairperson of the 150th commemoration of the Great Trek (1988).

Prof. Swart received numerous honorary awards during his career, including the Federation of Afrikaans Cultural Organisations’ Half-Century Award (1979) and Prestigious Cultural Award (1988) as well as the Danie Theron Cultural Award for Exemplary Service from the Rapportryersbeweging (1995).
