The Heritage Foundation published two new books in 2018, which are now available at our bookshop, Die Afrikaanse Winkel. All funds generated through the sale of these books go towards the HF’s main mission, namely heritage conservation, management of our heritage sites and our Heritage Conservation Awareness project.

The Voortrekker Monument Commemorative Book, compiled by Dr Annie Antonites and Johan Nel, is full of interesting and unique photos, documents and information about the history of the Voortrekker Monument. The book was compiled to celebrate the 80th commemoration of the Monument’s cornerstone-laying, which took place on 16 December 1938. The contents reflect eight decades of change based mainly on information housed in the HF’s archive, library and museum collections. The contents were carefully selected to present a behind-the-scenes story of the Monument. This year, the Voortrekker Monument also celebrates 70 years since its inauguration on 16 December 1949.

The Heritage Foundation’s first recipe book, entitled Deur Dik en Dun: lekker kos en stories uit ou Pretoria was written by Riana Mulder and took two years to complete. The book contains an interesting collection of facts and stories about the capital’s history linked to recipes from particular time periods and events. The stories and recipes cover a diverse range of topics and include, for example, anecdotes about children’s antics during Communion weekends, an Indian woman’s struggle for survival in the original Marabastad, the story of ‘Old Moes’ – Pretoria’s most famous vagrant in the 1800s – and also the love and loss of Pretoria’s literary son, Eugène Marais.

All the recipes are easy to follow and appropriate for cooks of all levels. Riana sometimes used modern versions of older recipes to ensure the availability of ingredients. The easy fruitcake recipe is, for example, a real winner with just three ingredients (and a pinch of salt, not mentioned in the recipe!). It tastes even better soaked in some brandy! Try the cupcake recipe – it really melts in your mouth!

The Commemorative Book is on sale for R150.00 and Deur Dik en Dun for R350.00. Both can be ordered online.
