On 1-2 September, three HF staff members attended the annual South African Society for Cultural History conference in Graaff-Reinet. The theme of the conference was “The cultural history of Graaff-Reinet and its surrounding area”. En route to the conference, our managing director, Cecilia Kruger, met with National Afrikaans Literature Museum and Research Centre staff to discuss potential collaboration between the two organisations. The trip included a stop-over at Doornbult, close to Hopetown – the concentration camp terrain that we help manage – to clean the hundreds of museum objects on display at the site. We also paid a visit to the Andries Pretorius Monument, which the HF moved to a safe location in the Camdeboo National Park in 2012. The 2018 SASCH conference will be held in Pilgrim’s Rest, with the theme “Rites of Passage” (birth and baptism, courtship and marriage, death and burial). Contact Estelle Pretorius (research@es.org.za) if you are interested in attending or presenting at the conference.
