The first Heritage Conservation Workshop was received with enthusiasm by the residents of Louis Trichardt (Makhado). We look forward to working with the new committee in future. The main goal of this project is to train communities to take responsibility for the basic maintenance and documentation of heritage sites and material culture in their district, within existing legal frameworks.

Eight people attended the workshop, and a new committee of interested parties was established under the guidance of Ms. Petria Marais. Following basic training and successful first meeting, the committee will meet again on 26 May to discuss their progress. One of the first projects undertaken involves the documentation of heritage resources in the district.

The Rhenosterspruit Committee (Gauteng) meets regularly and is raising funds for a new Information Centre. This Centre will include a museum exhibit. The district is located between Hartebeespoort Dam and Krugersdorp, west of Pretoria.

During our KZN Inspection Tour (24 – 25 May), we met with the Rapportryers Association about the establishment of a similar committee. Riana Mulder also gave a presentiation about the HCA Project at the Afrikanerbond’s Centurion branch on Saturday, 27 May.

If you would like to host a workshop in your town / district, please contact Riana Mulder at museum@es.org.za.
