The HF has been approached to relocate the grave of the renown scout and Voortrekker, Hans Dons de Lange (1799-1860), to a site that is more accessible. The grave is located near to Watersmeet, close to Ladysmith in KZN, outside of a township primary school.
Not only did De Lange participate in the Battle of Blood River (16 December 1838) , but he was also the key person behind the identification and the strategic placement of the site and the laager. He also prevented Andries Pretorius, the commander, from meeting the Zulu’s on horse back a day before the battle – thus preventing a certain tragedy. He could speak Zulu fluently.
Due to a shooting incident during which a Zulu died close to his farm (close to the current Newscastle, KZN), De Lange was found guilty of murder and was executed.
The HF have already engaged into a conversation regarding the conservation options to be considered of the grave with AMAFA, the KZN conservation authority.
