On 14 May staff of the Heritage Foundation and the Voortreker Monument met the editor of the Middelburg Observer, Gerhard Rheeder at Botshabelo to determine the extent of the deterioration and discuss the possible way forward. We were shocked to find that the one corner of the restored church had caved in and that the rest of the village is being vandalised. There is evidence of the presence of squatters whilst leaking taps (some for at least 3 years) at various points have resulted in unnatural wetlands. The Ndebele village that was built with funding from the Lotto, has burnt down and is desolate.
With the assistance of Mpumalanga Heritage under Marius Bakkes, a meeting will take place on 9 June at the site during which interested and affected parties will ponder over this difficult conservation issue.
