Adv. C.R. Swart’s statue, previously located on the University of the Free State’s main campus, boasts a new home. The statue was damaged and removed during the #Feesmustfall-campaign.
The Voortrekkers Free State, under the leadership of Willie Engelbrecht, Chief Secretary of the Voortrekker Movement, received approval from the UFS senate to relocate the C.R. Swart statue to the Doornkloof Voortrekker Farm.
The statue was removed from the UFS grounds on 19 Desember 2016 and transported to Pretoria in February 2017 for restoration by reknowned sculptor, Danie Nel. Repeated hammer blows and fire caused damages of up to R110 000 to the statue.
On Sunday, 2 April 2017, Adv. C.R. Swart’s legacy was restored during a special event hosted at the Sarel Cilliers heritage site. Danie Langner, Leader of the Voortrekkers, delivered a memorial speech about C.R. Swart, after which Willie Engelbrecht unveiled the restored statue.
This project was made possible by: The Voortrekkers, The Voortrekkers Free State, AfriForum, the FAK, The Heritage Foundation, and Mr. J.A. de Witt.
